Samsung X640 - PC Data Cable Suite

Can anyone advise please?

I'm really pleased with my new Samsung X640, and I'm now trying to get
organised with a data cable suite, to link the phone up with my PC, to back
up contacts, transfer photos to and fro, etc.

I picked up a data suite (USB cable + driver + application software) at a
market stall at the weekend. It was marked for the Samsung D500 but the
trader said it would work fine for most Samsung phones, the majority of
which have the same connection interface - and it did physically fit my
phone perfectly.

However when I got home and did a bit of homework on the web (I should have
done that first, I know, lol) I discover this:
1. The Samsung web site shows only a serial type PC lead, which works in
conjunction with software downloadable from their site.
2. There are a few third-party providers for data cable suites and the
MA-8230P from Mobile Action seems to be the one for my phone. This set is
compatible with quite a few other Samsung phones too, but not the D500,
which I was hoping to see (cos that's the phone for the pack I've been
conned into buying).

In my dodgy pack, the data lead itself has the identity Model No KQ-UBA,
Serial No WT048000317.

After all that, my question is...
...is it safe to connect this lead, together with software from the Samsung
website, or am I asking for trouble and should I bin it and get the
'correct' one? Also, are the third party USB sets OK, or should I get the
Samsung serial one?

Any good advice appreciated. Cheers.

Have you tried the software from Samsungs website

http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/nabc/support/b2c_support_query_results.jsp#
Then search in Global Download Center

If you search for X640 it brings up a link to either manuals OR
software which includes, SGH-X640C USB Driver (ver.1.0), SGH-X640C PIMS
& File manager (ver.1.0), SGH-X640C PC Sync (ver.1.0) and SGH-X640C
Image Editor (ver.1.0).
I don't have one to test but suspect your cable along with these bits
of software may be OK.

I couldn't find the above model anywhere on Samsungs UK site which is a
bit weird.

Thanks for the reply Mark. Encouraging - but I'll hang on for some more
responses first.
Cheers.

Tried it but no joy. Tried with both USB drivers: the one from Samsung's
web site; and the one that came on the disc with the D500 lead. The USM
modem software _appears_ to be installed, but I don't see any new devices
and nothing happens when I plug in the lead and then the phone. (Apart from
the phone charging!). The PIM/Sync software is installed but it can't see
the phone. Methinks the lead doesn't talk to the phone, so Windows can't
see the phone and thus can't to through "new hardware detected...", etc.

Hhhmmmm. Bummer.
