Orange are to start charging 15p connection charge from 1 October 2007.
Ripping off their PAYG customers even more.

The sign of a failing business desperate to get some money coming in. The
simple answer is to switch to Virgin. If people left Orange they might get
the message, although they would probably keep increasing charges to meet
their forecasted annual revenue. Virgin is a lot cheaper to use as PAYG
than any other provider. For contracts you can't beat 3. Stop being snobby
and go with the best value provider.

For my usage, I find Tesco to be the best value.

Snap. Don't use it _that_ much, but need to call any kind of numbers
when I do.

Really? Virgin Media has just increased the minimum call charge from 5p to
10p! Virgin also charges from the instant a call is answered. Does Orange
still provide 1 or 2 seconds (I forget which) of non charging?

Virgin also has stupidly high GPRS charges with no daily cap although oddly
no premium for international use GPRS.

The value added services with Virgin are non existent: no decent WAP portal,
no email service (although you can send but not receive using T-Mobile's 191
service) and no geographical specific GPRS/WAP services.

Virgin CS is also crap and the technical support just doesn't exist
according to any sensible rendition of the term "support".

Virgin used to provide a good value for money service with many useful
features (such as Mobile Email) but their service model and their price
model is way out of date. Both Tesco (what a horrible company) and even
T-Mobile offer far better for value pre pay services especially if cross
network calls or data are important.

The only positive thing about Virgin is the pay monthly by direct debit
service which, iirc, also reduces the minimum call charge from 10p to 5p per
call.

ISTR that was only on contract, not PAYG. No idea if it's still the case.

Only cheaper for landline and calls to other Virgin phones - 40p/min
afaik, for Xnet.

I agree. I have a Virgin pay monthly. I would like to use data but it
is just too expensive so I use my minutes up on 'dial up' internet.
I get about 10 times as many texts as I want - why can't I have some
data ? I'd be happy to have no texts and have data instead. I have
written to them about this. Nothing ever happens though except a reply
to say that they might do something and keep an eye on their web site.
£5/MB is a silly price to pay for data.

Virgin PAYG is not good value if you need to phone someone on another
mobile network. To 01 or 02 landlines and Virgin mobiles they are OK.

Tesco suits my needs and still retains the 5p minimum call charge.

And 15p/min to answerphone as well.

Only reason I keep mine is for the original Out Here text messages.
There's 7 quid of credit on there that's never going to get used.
