Nokia 6600 - startup problem
(too old to reply)

Hi all,

Need some advice.

My 6600 is not booting up. Error message: "Phone startup failed - contact
the retailer" That's as far as it gets, I see the word Nokia on the screen
but it doesn't request a PIN.

Screen and keypad backlights are illuminating so power doesn't seem to be
the problem.

Nokia don't deem my emails worthy of reply so any advice here would be
gratefully received.

thanks

Phil

Quite a common problem on series 60 phones, usually caused by not having
enough available memory. I hope you've taken a recent backup!

Basically the cure is to do a full factory reset, then restore. For a
6600 to carry out a reset (taken from a Symbian forum):

1. Make sure your phone is fully charged!
2. Switch-off your 6600 phone and remove MMC card.
3. Press and hold 3 keys; Green dial key, * Star key, no. 3 key on
keypad and then press the power on/off to switch on the 6600 phone.
4. Keep holding keys until you see the word "formatting" on the screen.!
5. After a few minutes when the Full phone formatting completed, your
6600 will back to original system and factory settings.

*WARNING - You will lose all of the information on the phone including
contacts, operator settings (i.e. messaging centre) etc.*

Restore the phone from your last backup, then carefully check what
you've got in the phone's memory, perhaps moving some of the stuff to
the MMC card if possible.

Alternatively if the phone is less than 12 months old, you can visit
your nearest Nokia service centre, and they can reset it for you (and
possibly flash to latest version).

Take it to your place of purchase or a service centre for repair, and
prepare to lose all of the data stored on it.
